PT update

Nate's physical therapist is pleased with his gross motor skill development. His walking now puts him where most 15 month olds are (he is 17 months old). Now, though, she recommends he have a speech evaluation, since most kids say at least a few, if not 15-20, words by now, and he doesn't say anything (not even "no" or "uh-oh"). I know I shouldn't worry, but it's hard not to. I just keep reminding myself that I have a happy, contented son, which is what matters most at this point.

You're right that a lot of times people are quick to want to make a "diagnosis" and nip it in the bud. I also just want to be responsible in case there is something deeper going on than just him taking his time developing, and oftentimes if there is something deeper, the earlier you know the better.

That's a good idea to talk to your mom! At this point Nate's PT is free, so I'm thinking the speech stuff might be too, but we'll see.

I bet he'll start speaking just as soon as he has something he wants to say that can't be communicated through smiles and laughter and hugs. :) I think you're right to be aware of what's going on, though. I know how worried one can get in these types of situations, and I just want you to know how impressed I am by how balanced and reasonable you're being. Your whole family's in my thoughts and prayers!

HI Katie - I think that it might be a good idea to have Nate evaluated for speech and language development by Regional Center of Orange County - then they can help you out :-) I think that they will come out to your home for the evaluation and it's a free service provided for you. Let me know if you have any questions or would like me to observe your adorable Nate! Love, Carolyn
